How we visit · NJ & UT
In-office & by telehealth
Office visits and telehealth are the same care, the same Vanessa, just different rooms. We see patients at our offices in Union, New Jersey and North Salt Lake, Utah — and by telehealth whenever that makes a visit easier to keep up with. Most people end up mixing the two.
Our offices
We’re a practice with real rooms — one in each state we serve. If sitting across from someone is what makes care feel like care, that’s exactly what we’ll do.
- Union, New Jersey — 1767 Morris Ave, Suite 303B, Union, NJ 07083 (get directions). Our primary office — SPRAVATO sessions and Sublocade and Brixadi injections happen here today, and on-site testing is available at either office.
- North Salt Lake, Utah — our Utah office. We’ll send the full address and directions when we confirm your visit.
In-person visits stay in the rotation
For New Jersey patients, we ask that we see each other in person at our Union office at least every three months. That’s our clinical standard — some things land better when you’re in the room — and for some medications it’s also what New Jersey requires.
That doesn’t mean telehealth is the second-tier option in NJ; most visits in between can absolutely be telehealth. It just means we don’t go fully remote indefinitely. For Utah patients, we work out a cadence together that fits your needs and the medications we’re managing.
What needs to happen in person
A few specific kinds of care can’t happen over telehealth at all — we’ll flag these together if any apply to you.
- SPRAVATO sessions — esketamine is given under a federal REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy) — an FDA program for medications that need extra safety measures. You receive each dose at a certified clinic and stay on-site for monitoring. program at REMS-certified offices. Today that means our New Jersey office. The first conversation about whether SPRAVATO fits can happen by telehealth; the dosing sessions themselves cannot.
- Sublocade and Brixadi injections — also REMS-administered, also our New Jersey office today. Follow-up visits and oral-medication management around them can run by telehealth.
- New ADHD-stimulant prescriptions — Schedule II controlled substances under federal law include stimulant medications such as Adderall, Vyvanse, Concerta, and methylphenidate. stimulants come with in-person rules. In New Jersey, we can start by telehealth, but the state requires an in-person visit within 30 days of that first appointment — the every-three-months rhythm above covers the rest. Federal telehealth rules for these medications are still being settled, so we’ll walk through exactly what applies to you once we’ve talked through your history.
- On-site urine drug screening — the point-of-care testing that’s part of addiction medicine happens in the office. Telehealth visits in between testing days are still on the table.
Where you need to be for telehealth
Telehealth visits work because of state licensing law: a clinician must be licensed in the state where the patient is physically located at the time of the visit — not where the patient lives. Vanessa is licensed in New Jersey and Utah, so we can see you by telehealth when you’re sitting in either of those two states when we connect.
Where the rule lands in practice: you can take a telehealth visit from your living room, your car parked at work, a quiet conference room — anywhere you can have a private conversation, as long as that place is in NJ or UT.
What a telehealth visit looks like
Visits run on a private video link we send the morning of, or by phone if video isn’t available. The conversation is the same one we’d have in the office: what brought you in, what’s working, what isn’t, and what we’ll try next.
What helps for a telehealth visit:
- A private space — somewhere you can speak openly. Headphones help if the household is busy.
- A reliable connection — wired or strong Wi-Fi. If video drops, we’ll switch to phone and keep going.
- Your medication list — prescription, over-the-counter, supplements. Photos of bottles work.
- Your insurance card — handy in case we need to confirm anything during the visit.
Booking a visit
In-office and telehealth visits are booked through the same scheduling flow. If you’re not sure which makes sense for your situation, give us a call at 973·920·7328 and we’ll talk it through.
Before your first telehealth visit, we’ll review and obtain your informed consent for telehealth — what it is, its benefits and limits, how we handle a technology problem during a visit, and your privacy rights. It only takes a moment, and we’ll answer any questions before you decide.
Our data-handling practices apply equally to telehealth and in-office visits — see our Notice of Privacy Practices for the full picture.
About this page
This page describes how we offer care; it is not medical advice for any individual. Whether an office visit or telehealth is the right fit depends on your medical history, the medications involved, and where you’ll be at the time — we’ll sort that out together at your visit or by phone before booking.
